Year 2 - Dynamic Dolphins - Mrs Gibson

Our Attendance

Weekly Attendance - 94.6 %

Attendance so far this academic year - 96.0%

The children have worked very hard on division in maths and are able to use what they know to solve problems. We have read 'The Flower' by John Light. The children loved the idea of books being locked away because they are dangerous and thought the ending to the story was wonderful.

Home learning

Home learning is sent home each Friday and should be returned by the following Tuesday. Your child will have maths, topic and literacy activities that are linked to the learning that has taken place during that week.

Spellings are also sent home on a weekly basis linked to our spelling lessons.

This week’s spellings are:

  • who
  • whole
  • any
  • many
  • clothes
  • busy
  • people
  • water
  • again
  • half

Reading

We encourage the children to read as much as possible and you play an important part in helping your child to read at home. You will find some questions inside your child’s reading record book that you could use to talk about the book after they have read it. It is important that children talk about the books they are reading to increase their comprehension skills. Please sign the reading record book when your child reads to you.

Our reading stars are children that read every night. These children will be rewarded for their effort each week.

Maths

This half term the children will be working on counting forwards and backwards in 1s, 2s, 5s, 3s and 10s from a range of numbers. This will help the children with the mental addition and subtraction methods that we use in year 2. Please help us by counting with your child at home.

Red, White and Blue

We have started our new topic called ‘Red, White and Blue’. During the topic the children will learn all about London. They will look at famous landmarks of the capital city, the Royal Family and will learn a little about the history of London. We will find out about the Great fire of London and the impact it had on how buildings were built and the Fire service.  We are linking Paddington Bear in literacy to London as he has had many adventures in the capital city and wrote many books about the different places he visited.  We have started our new topic called ‘Red, White and Blue’. Curriculum leaflet Autumn 1 - Travel and Transport
26 October 2016

For the next 10 weeks our topic will be; ‘Travel and Transport’.

We will be looking at how transport has changed over the years. We will research when cars, trains and aeroplanes were invented, when man first travelled to the moon and how they got there, the specific purpose of materials and much more. We are also planning a visit to York Railway Museum to compare different trains (further details to follow).
