Year 5/6 - Wise Owls - Mr Webb

Welcome to the Wise Owls page! Here you will find information about what is going on in your child's class.

Welcome to another school year! I am very much looking forward to working with you all in what should be a very exciting year!

Our first topic of the year will be the Ancient Egyptians and our class book is Holes. I'm very much looking forward to our Egyptian day. Our other themes are: Let's Protect the Environment; Let's Shake Things Up and Land of the Free.

Reading:

Reading is a top priority as a Wise Owl! We will be reading a range of books through the year. In class, we are starting the year with 'Holes' by Louis Sachar. It's an excellent book full of twists and turns! We encourage the children to read at home every night, you play an important role in this so please try to listen to your child read and sign their home school book.

P.E

Please ensure your child's P.E kit is bought into school on a Monday and left in school until Friday. Our scheduled PE days are Tuesday afternoon and Thursday afternoon; however, some weeks we may do PE on a different day so please ensure it is in school all week. It is especially important that your child has some trainers suitable for running in each day as we will be completing our daily mile straight after registration.

Swimming for the Year 5s will start later in the year. More details will follow after the Autumn term.

Home Learning

Home Learning is set on a Monday and is due in on a Friday. Children usually receive two pieces to do. Each week, we will set two pieces of Home Learning. If you could sit with your child while they are completing their Home Leanring, the help would be much appreciated!

How can you help?

  • Practise tables with your child, including the division facts that link eg 6 x 7 = 42 so 42 divided by 6 = 7.
  • Listen to them read regularly and ask them questions - question styles are stuck in front of the Reading Record.
  • Help your child with their research.
  • Check the Home/School diary regularly and sign it each weekend.
  • Home Learning will be set on a Monday and due in on a Friday. Please encourage your child to complete this with care, so that their work is something that they can feel proud of.

Working together is vital to your child's success so if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call into school and see me.

Class News

Spring 1 Week 2
19 January 2018

Firstly, well done Wise Owls! We share the gold certificate for attendance this week. It is still our target to see if we can have 100% attendance each week and drain the school of the 100% attendance King Edward pencils. That is the dream.

We had Matty Blair and Louis Jones in to visit this week. Both play for Doncaster Rovers and gave us an insight into the life of a professional footballer. Especially nice to have Louis in as he attended Trinity Academy - a local chap doing well for himself.

Spring 1 Week 1
12 January 2018

Hello 2018! We've made a flying start to the new year. So much so, it almost feels like Christmas never happened! We have had a few discussions about looking after each other during this January month. Although we are glad to be back at school, we're all feeling those January blues. The children have been lovely to each other this week. In literacy, we have given time to considering what our new year's resolutions could be and have written about them. Maths has seen us revisit place value to get our minds back into the numbers game.

The Environment

Our current topic is all about the environment. We have been learning and researching lots of facts. Wise Owls, your task is to write, at least, one fact you can remember from our work so far.

Autumn 2 Week 6
17 December 2017

We are speeding our way towards the end of a very long half-term. The Y6 children, in the past couple of weeks, have been working hard during their assessment week. Their results look very promising and Mr Buxton has been very impressed! Aside from the extremely hard work the children have been doing, we have found some time to enjoy the approach of Christmas. The KS1 nativity brought smiles to everyone's faces on Monday - an impressive performance from the little ones. Also, our school choir sang beautifully in the carol concert on Wednesday evening.

A trip to Drax
30 November 2017

The Wise Owls have had an excellent two days of trips to Drax power station this week. We have discovered so many things about how electricity is made and the effort required in order to produce it. It was a wonderful experience - something the children won't forget. It helped bring to life the start of our topic and has given us a greater understanding of the world around us.

Mr Webb :)

We are flying through this half-term! It's been another roller coaster of a week. Firstly, I want to thank all of the parents and carers that were able to attend on Thursday for our Egyptian performance. The children have really enjoyed this topic and it was lovely for them to be able to show off some of the aspects they've learnt. It is always a pleasure to have you visit our school. Again, thanks for coming in. The performance was fab and the children really show-cased their skills. Some actors and singers in the making!

Autumn 2 Week 1
11 November 2017

Hello! So, our first week back of the new half-term is over. It has flown by but I feel we're all back in the learning mindset. Autumn 2 is my favourite of all the half-terms and I'm looking forward to spending it with your children. They have been as delightful as ever this week and have made the first week back enjoyable. We have finished our Egyptian death masks this week and, I think you'll agree, they look brilliant. I've attached a picture below. I've also popped a picture of the children who received certificates this week.

Autumn 1 Week 8
27 October 2017

Another tremendous week with the Wise Owls! I cannot believe 8 weeks have passed so quickly. Your children have been wonderful to work with and I am very proud of each and every one of them. The first half-term is always the hardest as we all get to know each other and understand how our classroom works. However, I'm leaving Autumn 1 feeling like the Wise Owls 2017/2018 are in a good place. Definitely ready for a rest! We'll be eager to get back into it all in November!

Have a restful half-term. I've told the children to play out, read, have fun and enjoy being 9, 10 and 11!

I cannot believe it is week 7 already! What a busy half-term. This week contained mastering multiplication for the Year 6s and beginning multiplication for the Year 5s. We've started our Egyptian death masks - thanks for any cardboard you sent in! We've times tabled, begun to innovate a story, learnt new spelling rules and ran a good few collective miles on our daily mile! Phew! I think we need the weekend to recover. The parliament of Owls are resting until Monday!

Autumn 1 Week 4
29 September 2017

Another week has flown by! The parliament of Owls have been in session and have worked ridiculously hard. The Y6s have had their first taste of those tests we're not talking about! Myself, Mrs Lewins and Mr Buxton have been very proud. They should be proud of themselves too. We had a poet on Wednesday, Ian Bland. He made us all laugh, embarrassed the teachers and taught us a good few things about how to write and perform poetry. Lucy was so inspired that she wrote her own poem and performed it for the class!

Being a Wise Owl is quite easy to be.

The day an Olympian came to King Edward!
29 September 2017

We are loving our fitness at the moment! The daily mile is improving our fitness as a class. We've covered 179.5 miles/346km so far this year! To top off another fitness week, we have had the pleasure of Jenny Wallwork's company. The international superstar Olympian came to get us pumped and ready for the day ahead with a variety of different fitness activities. I was very impressed with our efforts.  I even had a quick go myself! Well done, team. Mr Webb :)

22 September 2017

Hello!

As you know, one of your home-learning tasks this week is your Arithmetic challenge sheet. The other home-learning activity is to tell me 3 facts you can remember from the Egyptian day. Any three facts you can remember. Our host for the day was very interesting and very funny. Think back. What three things have stuck in your mind?

Autumn 1 Week 3
22 September 2017

Bonjour! We have travelled all the way to Paris during the school day today! Had a visit to the Eiffel Tower and practised various French vocabulary as the day progressed! It has been a rollercoaster of a week! It started on Monday with the Egyptian day (see earlier post), which was just fantastic. The children have begun to write up their gruesome instructions on how to mummify a body. They obviously listened well as the details are spot on. Some very funny pieces of writing so far. I will post some work when it is completed.

Egyptian Day

What a fantastic day we have had! Firstly, thanks to all the parents and carers that helped organised such an array of Egyptian costumes! The children looked splendid. I almost felt I had stepped back in time when the children entered the classroom this morning.
