Reading
Subject Leader: Miss A Jude
Subject Intent: Reading is at the core of our curriculum at King Edward Primary School. Our pupils are encouraged to read for pleasure and to read widely. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education. We therefore intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to:
-
Develop knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live;
-
To establish an appreciation and love of reading;
-
To gain knowledge across the curriculum, and
-
To develop their comprehension skills.
We are committed to providing vocabulary rich reading material across the curriculum.
As a starting point and introduction to reading, we use Read Write Inc (RWI) for our phonics programme. Children are taught at a stage appropriate level and this allows them to understand how the sound of each letter (phoneme) links to the way in which that letter is written (grapheme). In EYFS (Reception) and Key Stage One, all pupils take part in a daily phonics session, building on and extending their knowledge. They are taught to blend words together and read/ spell tricky words, which are the ones we cannot sound out.
Curriculum Drivers:
Excited – Children will be exposed to a range of texts to develop their love of reading. Classrooms will be vocabulary rich and reading corners will be inviting.
Global Citizens – Children will read widely, both fiction and non-fiction linked to their projects and world news. This supports them understand diversity and prepares them for life in Modern Britain
Inquisitive – Children will want to read on / read more of their class novels or authors that they have heard of in class. Children will ask questions about characters, settings and authors because they are interested by texts.
Knowledgeable – Reading lessons will support children to read fluently. They will use skills taught in lessons to understand what they have read and where necessary answer questions about what they have read.
Resilient – Children will be taught strategies to overcome reading tricky words and ways to support them in comprehending texts. It is our intention to ensure that by the end of their primary education, all pupils are able to read fluently, and with confidence, in any subject in their forthcoming secondary education. We therefore intend to encourage all pupils to read widely across both fiction and non-fiction to: - Develop knowledge of themselves and the world in which they live; - to establish an appreciation and love of reading; - to gain knowledge across the curriculum, and - to develop their comprehension skills.
